What Is the Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz?
The Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz is the fourth of six events on the 2026 Grand Chess Tour. It’s also the first of three tournaments the Saint Louis Chess Club hosts to close out the season. Ten players, one combined scoreboard, two formats: nine rounds of rapid chess, then eighteen rounds of blitz.
Rex Sinquefield and Garry Kasparov co-founded the Grand Chess Tour in 2015. Saint Louis joined the following year and never left. The club calls itself the “Chess Capital of America,” and honestly, it has earned the title. Between the Sinquefield Cup, the U.S. Championships, and now three Grand Chess Tour events in one summer, more elite chess gets played inside this one building than almost anywhere else on the planet.
Where Saint Louis Fits Into the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Season
Here’s what makes this particular stop matter more than a typical mid-season event.
Grand Chess Tour rules require each of the nine full-tour players to play exactly two of the season’s three rapid and blitz legs. Poland happened in May. Croatia wrapped on July 5. That leaves Saint Louis as the only remaining rapid and blitz stop on the calendar. Most of the full-tour field simply doesn’t have a choice about showing up.
Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So, and Javokhir Sindarov all played the Superbet Rapid and Blitz Poland 2026 but skipped Croatia. Anish Giri, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu, Vincent Keymer, and Jorden van Foreest did the reverse. That’s seven of the nine full-tour players who still need Saint Louis to complete their quota. Only Alireza Firouzja and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who already played both Poland and Croatia, sit this one out.
Caruana led the season standings after Romania. Wesley So sat second, Vincent Keymer third. None of the three played Croatia, and Firouzja’s title there put him firmly back into Finals contention despite playing one more rapid and blitz event than all three men above him. Caruana, So, and Keymer get exactly one shot to answer that this week, before the tour shifts to the classical-only Sinquefield Cup.

Format Explained: Rapid, Blitz, and Scoring
The Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz uses the same two-part format as every rapid and blitz stop on tour this year.

Nine rounds of rapid chess run from August 2 to August 4. It’s a single round robin, so every player faces every other player exactly once. A win earns two points, a draw earns one. Blitz takes over for August 5 and 6: an 18-round double round robin, players facing each other twice, once with each color. Wins earn one point there, draws half a point. Add both segments together, and the highest combined score takes the trophy.
That’s 135 games in five days: 45 rapid, 90 blitz. Rapid is played at 25 minutes plus a 10-second increment from move one, the same as Zagreb. Blitz runs at 5 minutes plus a 2-second increment, slightly faster than Zagreb’s 5-plus-3. Ties split prize money evenly. But outright ties for the title don’t always stay ties, as Firouzja and Abdusattorov found out in Zagreb’s Armageddon decider, and the Saint Louis regulations leave room for a playoff if it comes to that.

Caruana enters as the overall points leader after Romania and hasn’t played a rapid and blitz leg since Poland. So sits second in the season standings, Keymer third off his Romania classical win. Sindarov is fresh off winning the 2026 Candidates and faces Gukesh for the World Championship this winter. Giri and Praggnanandhaa both tied for third in Zagreb, and Van Foreest is the man who replaced Aronian on the full tour lineup back in April, the same Aronian who’s now walked back in as a wildcard.
Levon Aronian is the real story of this year’s Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz. He won this exact tournament in 2025, his third Saint Louis title, edging out a field that included reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju. Then in April he withdrew from the full 2026 tour lineup for health reasons, and Jorden van Foreest took his spot. Four months later, he’s back on home soil (he’s represented the United States since 2021), defending the one Grand Chess Tour trophy he’s actually won. Just not as a full-tour player this time. His results this week won’t count toward the season standings at all.
Leinier Dominguez and Awonder Liang round out the wildcard trio. Both names should sound familiar if you followed the Naroditsky Memorial Rapid & Blitz in Charlotte last month. Both played that event’s Masters section. Now they get another shot at elite competition, on home turf, a month later.
