Months 1–2
The foundation
Openings, basic tactics and — the part most beginners skip — finishing a game without giving up. Beginner-friendly from the first class, whatever the age.
Months 2–4
Patterns, then practice
Puzzles set between classes, games reviewed with a coach, and the same mistake named until it stops happening. This is where the first measurable jump shows.
Months 3–6
The first tournament
A school or district event, chosen so the field is winnable. Most students see measurable improvement inside three to six months; the first trophy usually arrives here.
Month 6+
Rated play
State and national entries, a FIDE rating, and preparation built around the specific openings the next opponent plays.
Ongoing
The elite track
